Northern Plains Regional-Concussion Training Requirement

Attention Coaches and Officials

Every state now has legislation aimed at protecting young athletes from the risks associated with concussions in sport.  Minnesota’s law requires among other things that anynonprofit organization that organizes a youth athletic activity for which an activity fee is charged shall require all participating coaches and officials to receive initial online training and online training at least once every three calendar years thereafter, consistent with the Concussion in Youth Sports online training program available on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Web site.”  This includes USA Wrestling events.

Therefore, any person that will be working as an official at this weekend’s Northern Plains tournament AND any person who wants to obtain a coaches pass must present documentation of having current online training as specified above.

Since the majority of each state’s legislation has this same requirement, this should not be a hardship. If you have individuals who have not completed the required training, here is the link.  http://www.cdc.gov/headsup/youthsports/training/index.html

Again, the training through the CDC is not the only training that fulfills this requirement, for example in Minnesota the training required by our state high school league for coaches and officials fulfills this requirement.  If your state has a similar requirement for your USA Wreslting events and you have a list that you can provide us with those that have completed the training please forward that to me.  Otherwise, each individual will need to bring with them a certificate of other documentation of compliance.  Examples of accepted documentation are attached.  Also acceptable is a print out of a database showing your name from your state high school association concussion training,

Another component of our legislation in Minnesota is the requirement that we “make information accessible to all participating coaches, officials, and youth athletes and their parents or guardians about the nature and risks of concussions, including the effects and risks of continuing to play after receiving a concussion, and the protocols and content, consistent with current medical knowledge from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.”  This information is available on our website http://www.mnusawrestling.org/ as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Web site http://www.cdc.gov/headsup/index.html
